Understanding Autism
Autism Spectrum Disorder (Autism) is a neurodevelopmental difference that influences how individuals experience the world, communicate, and interact with others. Autism is called a “spectrum” because it presents uniquely in each person, with a wide range of strengths, challenges, interests, and support needs. Many autistic individuals demonstrate remarkable abilities in areas such as problem-solving, creativity, attention to detail, honesty, and deep focus on areas of interest.
Autism may affect social communication, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and behavioral flexibility. Some individuals may experience differences in how they understand social cues, manage transitions, or respond to sensory input such as sounds, textures, or lights. These differences are not deficits, but variations in how the brain processes information. With appropriate understanding and support, autistic individuals can thrive across the lifespan.
